A patio door is different form a front or back door in that instead of a dense and solid material, it is made up of see-through panes of glass. The reason for this is because a patio is that part of the house where the garden meets the house. A good view of the outdoors is generally a prerequisite of a patio door.

Aside from the panes of glass, patio doors are made with different types of materials. Each one will have their own advantages and disadvantages. The material you choose for your door will determine its look and design. These door materials are:

  • Wood
  • Aluminum
  • Composite: upvc and fiberglass
  • Wood clad

Aside from the choice of material, there is the kind or type of door to choose from. This refers to the way the patio doors open. This will address spatial considerations. Sometimes, the choice you make here will limit your choice of material. There are only two types:

  • Hinged or swinging
  • Sliding

Hinged doors are made in all four types of material, but sliding doors are commonly made out of aluminum. A sliding door is space saving, as it does not use any extra space to open. A swinging door can be a single, a double, or a triple door. Again this depends on how much space you have.

Most homeowners prefer a patio door made out of upvc. They are usually of the hinged type, although there are some manufactured with the sliding design. These doors are designed for energy efficiency, and they do not require much maintenance as well. Insulated panes of glass and weatherstripping are pre installed at the factory.
