This has to do with how a door is designed to open. A swinging door has hinges that attach to a jamb. It can either swing in or out. It is available as a single door, a double door, or a triple door. This is a common design for front doors as well.

A sliding door opens with the use of rollers attached to the top or bottom of an aluminum frame. It requires less space to open. Standard pre-made sliding doors have one permanent door pane, with the other pane being the sliding part.
